Course Description

Real World Leadership provides skills that will be needed in each student’s future. This course introduces the various dimensions of personal and people leadership to assist students in understanding the traits for becoming a better leader in their professional and personal lives. The class is a dynamic, integrative and practical leadership development program designed and instructed by a seasoned business leader with extensive real world experience. Students will explore teamwork, interpersonal and communications skills, self-knowledge, decision analysis, group dynamics and global/cultural perspectives. The class will also help students define individual personality preferences, strengths and areas of development and understand how to utilize the self-awareness to become a more effective leader. Students will create their individual leadership plans that will help guide them on their future career leadership learning journey.

  3. Strengths finder 2.0. by Tom Rath, New York: Gallup Press, 2007.
    (Must not be used edition because it contains a code for the assessment.)
  4. The Five Dysfunctions of a Team: A Leadership Fable by Patrick Lencioni, San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2002.
  5. A notebook is also required to serve as your Learning Journal and a binder is required for your final portfolio.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will identify and describe leadership styles and a variety of characteristics of effective leadership.
  2. Students will describe how their personal style influences their leadership and ability to work with others.
  3. Students will explain aspects of leadership that they experience within the context of their daily lives.
  4. Students will develop a comprehensive personal leadership plan/portfolio tied to their future career plans.
  5. Students will demonstrate a variety of teamwork skills including: planning and organizing, group dynamics,
    crucial conversations, giving and receiving feedback, facilitating and coaching in their Leadership projects.
  6. Students will explore global and cultural perspectives.
